FAST is an acronym used to help detect and respond to the needs of a person having a stroke. The acronym stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties and Time to call emergency services.
Facial drooping: A section of the face, usually only on one side, may appear to sag. Ask the person to smile and it may be crooked.
Arm weakness: The person may have one-sided arm weakness and may not be able to raise one of their arms fully. Ask them to raise each arm.
Speech difficulties: The person may have trouble understanding what you are saying, or may have trouble speaking. Ask them a question.
Time: If any of the symptoms above are showing, time is important. Call 911.
