Pivoting in the Pandemic: Virtual Rehab for Community-based Exercise for Persons with Stroke

Session Objectives:

  1. Discuss the evidence supporting virtual stroke rehabilitation, with a focus on the delivery of community exercise programming
  2. Describe the clinical approaches and considerations to implementing virtual rehab in rehabilitation and community settings including enablers, barriers, strategies and tools
  3. Discuss examples of Virtual Stroke Exercise Programs eg. TIME virtual pilot, TRAIL
  4. Identify current and future resources for implementing community-based exercise and virtual stroke rehab eg. The Canadian Stroke Community-based Exercise Recommendations, Canadian Stroke Best Practice Guidelines on virtual rehab

Liz Inness is a physical therapist with neurorehabilitation expertise, Lead of the Mobility Innovations Centre, and Affiliate Scientist at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute – University Health Network. She is also an Assistant Professor (status-only) at the University of Toronto Department of Physical Therapy, with cross-appointments in the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute. Liz is particularly interested in advancing clinical practice through clinical–research partnerships. Her work includes implementation of novel methods of assessment and training reactive balance control to prevent falls, and models of care and clinical tools to support early access and long-term engagement in aerobic exercise and physical activity after stroke and brain injury.

Nancy Salbach is a physical therapist, a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto, an adjunct scientist at KITE, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network, and a Heart and Stroke Foundation Mid-Career Investigator. Dr. Salbach has a background in epidemiology, and is an internationally recognized knowledge translation expert. She leads a well-funded and highly cited research program that consistently involves collaboration with patients, clinicians, provincial stroke networks, and national organizations. Research in her Knowledge-to-Action lab aims to advance stroke rehabilitation practice and increase access to community exercise programs for older adults with balance and mobility limitations. She co-chairs the writing group to update the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations for rehabilitation.

Ada Tang is a physical therapist, Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University, and Clinician-Scientist (Phase II) with the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation. Dr. Tang has extensive clinical experience in adult stroke and acquired brain injury rehabilitation at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. She carries this clinical experience into her research program with the MacStroke Canada research team, whose work is focused on promoting exercise, physical activity and cardiovascular health in people living with stroke.
