Using an interdisciplinary approach, we will discuss:
  • Stroke as a serious illness
  • Talking about stroke and critical treatment decisions
  • Advance care planning in stroke
  • Special considerations for stroke patients and palliative care
  • Briefly touch on MAID and stroke

Speakers: Kelvin Kuan Huei Ng, MBBS (UK), MRCP (Lond), CCST (UK) in Stroke Medicine, General Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Stroke Medicine and General Internal Medicine Specialist, Hamilton Health Sciences; Associate Professor in Medicine (Neurology), McMaster University:   Dr. Kelvin Ng was granted his medical degree in 2002 at Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ School of Medicine at the University of London in the United Kingdom.  He has trained in Stroke Medicine at both McMaster University and at Nottingham University, United Kingdom. He is an Associate Professor in Medicine (Neurology) at McMaster University and is the Director of the Stroke Research Program at Hamilton Health Sciences. He is a clinical lead for the Palliative Care Education Program and an advocate for the Serious Illness Care Program at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Gillian Maguire, RN(EC) NP-adult, MN - Nurse Practitioner – Integrated Stroke Unit, Hamilton Health Sciences:  Gillian Maguire earned her undergraduate nursing degree at Ryerson University in 2005 and her master’s degree and became a nurse practitioner in 2009.  She began her career in the Emergency Department in Toronto and Milton.  She moved into Stroke care in 2018.  Her clinical experience has led her to have a passion in end of life care and patient advocacy.  She is a clinical lead for the Palliative Care Education Program and an advocate for the continued advancement of the Serious Illness Care Program at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Leigh G Barr, MSc, SLP Reg-CASLPO - Integrated Stroke Unit, Hamilton Health Sciences:  Leigh has been a SLP with the Integrated Stroke Program since 2005.  She obtained her MSc- SLP at the State University of New York at Fredonia in 2004.  Leigh is an adjunct clinical professor with McMaster University’s school of SLP. Over the years, Leigh has participated in education endeavors with medical education, research and tutoring.  Special interests are in the areas of aphasia, outcome measures and palliation/end-of-life care.  When not working, Leigh enjoys time with her husband, daughter and their sundry of household pets in Dundas, Ontario.
