Working with Substitute Decision Makers While Providing Acute Stroke Care

 

Presented by Michelle Allain Bioethicist for Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC), St Joseph’s Care Group (SJCG) and Home and Community Care in Thunder Bay.

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify common situations where consulting a substitute decision-maker (SDM) is required during acute stroke care.
  • Determine who is the SDM utilizing the Substitute Decision Maker Hierarchy.
  • Understand when it is appropriate to contact the Public Guardian and Trustee to support in decision making relating to acute stroke care.
  • Recognize when there is disagreement between multiple SDMs or family members and understand how to mitigate and resolve these situations
